Must be registered to vote in the State of Connecticut in order to work. (Unless you are 16 or 17 years old)
If you are 17 years old but will be 18 years of age by the November election, you will need to register to vote in order to work.
All positions require good communication skills. The ability to read, write, have good vision, and be able to do basic math (additions, subtraction, & counting) is required.
A pleasant and upbeat personality is a plus.
The shift is from 5:00 am to approximately 10:00 pm (Unless the Moderator ask differently)

ASSISTANT REGISTRARS (16 and 17-year old’s are NOT allowed to apply for this position)
Assistant Registrars assist electors whose names are not on the official checklist, or who lack proper ID, or who have other voter registration problems or questions and assist the Moderator with other problems at the polling place, as needed.
- Arrive at the polls no later than 5:00 a.m. (may be asked by the Moderator to come in at 4:30 a.m.)
- Be sworn in by Moderator and sign the oath
- Set up phones and communication equipment
- Observe & assist Moderator in setting up the tabulator
- Transfer, Registration, and other Forms
- Add names to Add- On lists (as necessary)
- Assist electors when necessary

OFFICIAL CHECKERS
When an elector arrives to vote in person, the Official Checker must ensure that the elector’s name is on the official voter list and must “mark” the elector’s name “as voting.”
- Arrives at polls no later than 5:00 a.m.
- Be sworn in by Moderator and sign the oath
- Set up table and signage
- Cross off names, look for a street name, street number, and then the electors name
- Sign necessary forms

BALLOT CLERKS
The Ballot Clerk is charged with handing out one ballot to each elector whose name has been “marked as voting” by the checker and issuing replacement ballots for any that are spoiled during voting.
- Arrive at the polls no later than 5:00 a.m.
- Be sworn in by Moderator and sign the oath
- Set up table and signage
- Open one package at a time
- Fill out Ballot Log Worksheet
- Check for printing defects
- Alert Moderator if the possibility of running short
- Issue replacement ballots (Only if Moderator approve)
- Spoiled and Abandoned ballots
- Sign necessary forms

TABULATOR TENDERS
The Tabulator Tender is stationed near the tabulator to make sure that electors are feeding their ballots into the machine properly, while protecting the elector’s right to a secret ballot. The Tabulator Tender will direct any elector who needs to spoil a ballot to the Ballot Clerk for replacement and will report any ballot jams or other problems with the tabulator to the Moderator.
- Arrive at the polls no later than 5:00 a.m.
- Be sworn in by Moderator and sign the oath
- Set up table and signage
- Mark a zone of privacy around the ballot box
- Have a privacy folder available to cover ballot
- Assist elector if tabulator rejects ballot
- Explain how to get a new ballot
- Call Moderator if tabulator is jammed
- Check voting privacy booths and cap the pens
- Sign payroll sheet and all forms
TABULATOR TENDERS’ SUPPLIES
- At least one privacy folder at all times
- “I Voted Today” stickers
- Other privacy folders as electors drop them off
GREETER
Greet electors. Inform electors to have a form of I.D. available, direct them to the checker to get checked off. Some polling places will have a split list (done alphabetically by streets) so make sure you send them to the street pertaining to the elector. Direct elector to posters if they have questions if that does not help get Moderator. Hold doors for electors if a doorstop is not available.
FLOATER
The responsibilities of the floater is to be available at a polling location and be ready to fill in for:
- Official Checkers
- Ballot Clerks
- Machine Tabulators
This position would require you to come to each of the training sessions for the above positions for you to understand and replace any of the above as needed.
